Helping People by Improving Memory in Their Daily Life

ACT / SAT Test Preparation

Both from personal experience (working with ADHD high school students who did not perform well on either the SAT or ACT) and from a theoretical perspective, it made sense to us to utilize the Cogmed working memory training program to help improve students’ test scores.

Cogmed has established through research that:

        *working memory can be improved through training;

        *increasing an individual’s working memory abilities         positivelyimpacts that person’s reading comprehension,         math computation, and logical problem-solving abilities;

        *Cogmed’s training program increases students’ ability to stay         focused, concentrate better, and reduce their distractibility.

Given these positive results for most individuals who complete the Cogmed training, we believed that going the training program could improve students’ scores on the ACT and SAT.  As a result, we began to collect data with students who had taken the ACT or SAT, went through the Cogmed training, and then retook the test.  Although the data is preliminary (and not a formal research study with a control group), the initial results have been encouraging.And it is important to note that these results are for students in general, not just students with ADHD.

Who might benefit from the Cogmed training as it applies to SAT and ACT preparation?Individuals who:

        *struggle with staying focused and concentrating over long         periods of time;

        *have difficulty with remembering what they have just read         (creating the need to reread passages and thus, taking more         time to complete comprehension questions);

        *have problems with reading comprehension.

        *get easily distracted by those around you?

        *run out of time before completing the exam?

        *tend to make “careless errors” on test questions;

    OR for any student who wants to raise their test score in order to enhance their chances of acceptance into the college of their choice, and improve their ability to receive more scholarship funds.
