Helping People by Improving Memory in Their Daily Life

Professional Exam Preparation

One of the newer applications of the Cogmed training program is to assist individuals who are preparing for professional licensure examinations.

Cogmed has research which demonstrates it improves adults’ working memory ability.  That is, adults who complete the Cogmed training are better able to stay focused, concentrate, hold onto information, and remember what they have studied.  This is true for adults ranging from their early 20’s into their later adult life (70 year olds!)

Additionally, research conducted by the National Academy of Sciences shows that working memory training programs such as Cogmed actually increase individuals’ fluid reasoning ability.  Fluid reasoning is the set of skills utilized to solve problems by means of logic and is shown to be highly related to academic achievement and higher level professional performance.

Cogmed has also established that individuals who successfully complete the working memory training program show increases in their math computation skills and their reading comprehension.  Obviously, these are core skills which significantly impact an individual’s performance on professional exams.

Recently, Cogmed has been gathering data and completing research with high school and college students preparing for the ACT and SAT college entrance exams.  Although the research is not yet completed, the early results show positive results – individuals who complete the Cogmed working memory training show improvement in their SAT and ACT scores between pre-training and post-training scores.  Cogmed is currently gathering data (pre- and post-training) for individuals taking graduate school entrance exams (MCAT, LSAT, GRE).

Who might benefit from the Cogmed training as it applies to examination preparation?

  Individuals who:

*struggle with staying focused and concentrating over long         periods of time.

*have difficulty with remembering what they have just read         (creating the need to reread passages and thus, taking more         time to complete comprehension questions).

        *have problems with reading comprehension.

*tend to make “careless errors” on test questions.

*want to raise their test score to enhance their chances of         acceptance into professional preparation programs         (medical school, law school).

*need to obtain a higher scorer on a professional licensure         exam in order to become licensed in their career field (social         work, accounting, engineering, psychology, etc.)

*desire to improve their logical thinking and problem solving         on complex multiple step mental tasks.
